OUR HISTORY

Fire Mountain School was founded in 1983 to provide individually-tailored early childhood education for children in the Cannon Beach- Nehalem Valley area of the North Oregon Coast.  Parents built the school  themselves and have put a lot of sweat into not only building this school, but also maintaining it and making sure that it continues to be a place where teachers, kids and their families feel welcome.
We are a non-profit school that is aiming for a place based education, rooted in connection to Nature and People. We cherish the Fire Mountain School Community and plan a lot of activities to strengthen the kids connection in the classroom, outdoors as well as with all family members.

philosophy

Fire Mountain School has three central goals for children:
That our children develop a strong and positive sense of themselves.
That they come to see learning as an ongoing, joyful, and self-initiated quest.
That they come to know themselves as interactive participants in the wider natural, social, and practical world.

curriculum

The curriculum focuses on Place Based, interdisciplinary studies.  This approach creates a bridge between disciplines so that students can understand the relationships and connections that exist in real life.  Grades and testing are not employed as measures of performance.

Method

Using a hands-on approach, we seek to spark initiative, an inner sense of achievement and lasting self-confidence, challenging each child according to his or her abilities, interests, and stage of social development.  We aim to help facilitate a child's growth in all areas: social, emotional, intellectual, creative, spiritual, and physical.
