Our HistoryFire Mountain School was founded in 1983. For over 40 years we have provided place-based education for children on the North Oregon Coast. Parents constructed the original school house themselves, and the community continues to maintain it. We ensure that our buildings and grounds are a place where teachers, kids and their families feel welcome and supported.
We are a non-profit school that is rooted in connection to nature and people. We cherish the Fire Mountain School Community and intentionally plan activities that strengthen our children's connection to each other, the community and the outdoors. Curriculum & Philosophy |
The curriculum focuses on Place Based, interdisciplinary studies. This approach creates a bridge between disciplines so that students can understand the relationships and connections that exist in real life. Grades and testing are not employed as measures of performance.
Using a hands-on approach, we seek to spark initiative, an inner sense of achievement and lasting self-confidence. We challenge each child according to his or her abilities, interests, and stage of social development. We aim to facilitate a child's growth in all areas: social, emotional, intellectual, creative, spiritual, and physical.
