About Fire Mountain School Fire Mountain is an independent school founded in 1983. We are privately funded which emancipates us from state testing requirements and allows us expanded freedom to explore and create. Teachers and parents join together to create a community structure within which children experience discovery, challenge, experimentation, risk, failure and mastery. For children, experiential outdoor education can impart deeper understanding of the world, and instill a sense of wonder and excitement. The place-based curriculum will call upon students to explore the north coast landscapes with their eyes open - learning to perceive the world around them clearly, to understand the processes that shape it, to gain confidence and skills in navigating outdoor settings, and to have the opportunity to learn in the “living laboratory” of their home communities.
Fire Mountain School's mission is to nurture each child by providing a joyful, place-based learning experience. We have three central goals for our students: 1) That they develop a strong and positive sense of themselves; 2) That they come to see learning as an ongoing, joyful, and self-initiated quest; and 3) That they come to know themselves as interactive participants in the wider natural, social, and practical world.
Each class is limited in size to 12 to ensure individual attention. Mixed-age grouping is an important feature that reflects our belief that combining ages enhances a sense of community. Fire Mountain School emphasizes communication, compromise, cooperation and commitment. Students help with classroom jobs and work together to take responsibility for themselves and their school.
The school is located at the northern edge of Oswald West State Park, just south of Cannon Beach and north of Manzanita, on land donated by one of the founding families. Children go on nature hikes through the adjoining old-growth forests and to the beach from the school’s back door. This unique setting provides the opportunity for children to become connected with their environment. We believe that a diverse community creates strength and expanded world-view, and therefore do not discriminate on race, creed, color, national origin, sexual orientation or other differences. We serve Tillamook and Clatsop Counties.
