About
Fire Mountain School is located in the coastal community of Falcon Cove, adjoining the Northern boundary of Oswald West State Park on land donated by one of the founding families. Children go on nature hikes through old growth forests and to the beach from the school’s back door. This special setting provides the opportunity for children to become connected with their environment. Our students have come from as far away as Astoria to the North, Hamlet on the Sunset Highway to the East, and Garibaldi to the South.
Our school building was designed and built by parents in two stages over six years. It has three classrooms, two of which are connected by a sliding door which allows us to create a larger space for meeting together. The school also has a small library (a book mobile bus also visits us from Tillamook County Library), office, resource room, commons space, community kitchen, kiln shed, and large forest playground.
Fire Mountain School's mission is to nurture each child by providing a joyful, place-based learning experience. We have three central goals for our students:
|
Our maximum class size of twelve students gives us the freedom to utilize the children's passions as the basis of learning. This helps develop motivated life-long learners who have a deep knowledge and respect for self, others and their environment. Mixed-age grouping is an important feature that reflects our belief that combining ages enhances a sense of community. Fire Mountain School emphasizes communication, collaboration, cooperation and commitment. Students help with classroom jobs and work together to take responsibility for themselves and their school.
